Kyle Edmund suffered a disappointing first-round exit at the US Open as he struggled physically against Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi.

The British No. 1 got his nose in front by winning a low-quality first set, but his opponent clawed his way back into the tie in the second.

Physical problems got the better of the 16th seed towards the end of the third and Lorenzi – who reached the last-16 last year – came away with a 4-6 6-4 7-5 6-1 win, with Edmund flagging in the fourth and ultimately final set.

Lorenzi thumped down 20 aces – eight of which came in the final set as Edmund’s movement became more and more restricted due to cramp.
