Krishnan Guru-Murthy cringes at 'painful' media COP26 pronunciation of Glasgow

Krishnan Guru-Murthy has appealed to news organisations around the world to pronounce Glasgow properly ahead of COP26 – and Scots fans couldn’t resist chipping in with some ideas of their own.

Channel 4 broadcaster Krishnan wrote on his Twitter feed that he was unhappy with the way the Scots city was being pronounced in the run up to COP26.

He wrote: “Dear American and other friends – it’s pronounced Glas-go not glas-gow. Watching everyone get it wrong on US news channels is painful.”

Fans online couldn’t resist also having some of their own suggestions ready for Krishnan and his peers, whilst others agreed it was an issue they’d been trying to resolve for years.

One said: “God forbid they visit Milngavie or have a wee donder doon sauchiehall st”

Another added: “Even Kirkcudbright could be a wee bit of a challenge!”

Someone else who was fed up of years of abuse said: “Dozens of Scottish names wrongly pronounced on UK TV…and geographical faux-pas…not least..referring to Dumfries & Galloway as the Scottish Borders…lived with it all my life but it gets worse…thought news channels would be able to check pronunciations..”

Others however suggested Kristen might like to add another few options to his repertoire.

One said: “No, I was taught it should be Glass-go.”

Another queried: “Isn’t it Glas-gae?”

And a third added: “I’d be ecstatic if they start to pronounce it Glesga.”
