Klopp provides Liverpool injury update ahead of Champions League clash with Ajax

Jurgen Klopp has broken the bad news that Thiago’s return has been delayed again, which means he could be out until Christmas.

But there is good news for the Liverpool manager, with injured trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Naby Keita, and Xherdan Shaqiri all close to a return, while Keita is a possibility to play against Ajax on Tuesday night.

Midfielder Thiago suffered a “bad injury” after a shocking challenge from Richardson in the Mersey derby, and has been sidelined for six weeks.

Reds boss Klopp did reveal that the Spain international has trained since picking up the injury, but admitted that there is still some way to go in his recovery, and he will not be back for “a few weeks”.

Thiago is still some way off a return to first-team action

The German coach addressed the talk about why the player has been out for so long, when he said: “Thiago we have to maybe clarify it a little bit.

“On that day when Thiago got injured in that challenge in the Everton game, there was another bad injury and after the scans it was like: one was really bad news and the other one was really good news because nothing was broken, nothing was ruptured and stuff like this.

“But, as we realise now, it was still a massive impact on the knee. The problem is in a situation like that, nothing is ruptured and nothing is broken and that means everybody thinks, OK, you can go after a few days’, but the impact on the leg was that big that it is still not OK.”

Thiago has returned to training, but each time, it seems, the knee has flared up, and Klopp insisted that while the summer signing is showing signs of progress, he will not be back in action in the near future.

Klopp added: “It is not massive and he trains from time to time, not in the moment because we just have to realise that we have to go a few further steps. I can’t say exactly when he will be fine, but it will take a few weeks still with Thiago.”

The Liverpool manager, though, did have some good news on the injury front, when he revealed that Alexander-Arnold, Keita and Shaqiri are “all close” to a return.

Midfielder Keita is even a possibility to play against Ajax on Tuesday night after he suffered a hamstring injury in the 3-0 win over Leicester.

“They are all getting close, not close enough for Tuesday…(though) with Naby we have to check, but the other two, not,” he said.

“Trent is looking good – Nobody gave me the green light for tonight. I saw him on the pitch doing his rehab stuff so that already looks good but I cannot decide when it will be finished.

“With my experienced eye, from what I saw today, it won’t be much longer.”
