Centre-back Matip has missed Liverpool’s last three games in league and cup after limping off against West Brom just after Christmas, with the Reds having to field Jordan Henderson in defence for the defeat to Southampton earlier this month.
Matip is Liverpool’s only remaining senior recognised centre-back following injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, and Klopp is pondering recalling him to face United.
“Joel is close,” said the Liverpool boss.
“Does it make sense now to throw him in with just one or two sessions he didn’t do yet?
“We have to see if he can train tomorrow with the team. I haven’t decided yet.”
Liverpool have picked up just two draws and a defeat from their last three league games as they have lost ground at the top of thetable, and ex-Reds defender Jamie Carragher admits to nerves ahead of meeting United.
“I think the last few weeks yes [I have been nervous],” Carragher told Sky Sports Super 6.
“I think three or four weeks ago Liverpool looked like they were in a position to pull away from the other teams.
“United at the start of the season were inconsistent, City were the same, and I think that’s the frustration at Liverpool.
“It’s not just dropping points against big teams, it’s games you think you should win. You always look ahead in the fixture list and think we’ll probably get nine points from nine, or seven from nine, and Liverpool have only got two points from nine.”
