Klopp explains choosing Diogo Jota ahead of Firmino after Atalanta hat-trick

Jurgen Klopp paid special tribute to Diogo Jota as the £45million man ran riot in Italy to show it was money well spent.

The summer signing scored a quite magnificent Champions League hattrick against Atalanta, to give Liverpool complete control of their group, and his manager was purring afterwards.

“For tonight it made sense to use the good shape Diogo was in, and it was clear the way Atalanta play, the skill set of Diogo helps,” said Klopp.

“He used his shape in an incredible way and played a super, super game.

“But I don’t think any system could have defended us tonight. Sadio, Mo and Diogo the way they play, and the support they got from the others.

“It wasn’t about the system, it was about the way we play. Outstanding.”

Liverpool’s front trio couldn’t be stopped

Jota became only the third player in Liverpool’s glorious European history to score a hat trick away from home – after Michael Owen twice, and Sadio Mane, as the Reds produced a stunning display.

The 5-0 trouncing leaves Klopp with a headache for the weekend against Manchester City, after dropping Roberto Firmino to form a brilliant new-look front three…but he insisted it was the right sort of problem.

Klopp is delighted with the headache Jota is giving him

“Good performances never give me a headache,” he added.

“But the world is sometimes in a really a bad place, when at the moment somebody is shining, we speak immediately about another player, and I immediately have to explain why he is in the team.

“We would not even be in the Champions League if Bobby Firmino would not be with us. He will be in the team and he is one of ours.

“A lot of people in the world ask what makes Liverpool special, I would say Bobby Firmino playing.

Will Firmino return vs Man City?

“For us it is important we have more than 11 – and tonight Diogo, but that says nothing about Bobby and is absolutely nothing to do with me having a headache.

“I am more than happy with the way the boys played tonight, they were incredible.”

Klopp also reserved special praise for teenager Rhys Williams, who belied his tender years to produce a composed display at the heart of defence in the absence of Virgil van Dijk.

Williams impressed at the heart of defence

Playing alongside Joe Gomez – creating the 35th starting central defensive partnership in Klopp’s reign, he was outstanding, and the manger said: “I couldn’t be more happy for Rhys.

“Rhys was exceptional. You should see him in the dressing room, you could not knock the smile out of his face, it would be impossible and it’s really great to see.

“I can not imagine being 19 years-old and playing my second adult game in the Champions League against Zapata – it is incredible.

“I would be nervous like hell and the boys are not obviously.”
