It’s fair to say 2002 was a tough year for Katie Price .
That May her eldest son Harvey was born incurably blind and suffering from growth disorder, Prader Willi Syndrome.
And worse news was to come when she was given a earth-shattering cancer diagnosis just 11 weeks later.
Katie – who then went by her Page 3 name of Jordan – was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called leiomyosarcoma or LMS.
LMS attacks the smooth muscle tissue found throughout the body and carries a survival rate of 50 per cent at an advanced stage.
“The word cancer strikes terror into the heart of everybody,” she told the News of the World at the time.
“I’m absolutely reeling from the news. But Harvey is my inspiration, my reason for living and beating this thing.”
In Katie’s case, the tumour was located on the inside of the index finger on her left hand. The lump was first spotted by a manicurist while she was pregnant.
Twice doctors told her the growth was nothing to worry about. But as it continued to grow rapidly, she insisted on seeing her usual doctor who was immediately concerned.
She underwent a biopsy at Nuffield Hospital in Brighton and had the lump was removed.
Thinking she was in the clear, Katie flew to the US to promote a Playboy shoot and was terrified when she received a call asking her to return to the hospital.
There, doctors told her she had cancer and that they believed it had been accelerated by her pregnancy.
“The doctor sat me down immediately. I could tell from his face that something wasn’t right. Then he came right out with it. He said, ‘I’ve got bad news, it’s cancer,’” she said.
“I almost laughed but just sat staring at him as he went into a more detailed explanation of what they’d found.
“It seems so stupid now but I didn’t ask about chemotheraphy and radiotheraphy. I just sat there nodding, not taking it all in. I couldn’t feel anything. Couldn’t think anything. Couldn’t even cry.”
What followed was a raft of tests to see if it had spread, with doctors almost certain that the lump would return.
Fortunately for Katie, it had been caught early and the only follow-up required was regular MRI scans.
But when her marriage to Peter Andre collapsed in 2009, she feared the tumour would return.
“I’m supposed to have a scan but keep putting it off,” she told heat magazine.
“I had cancer when I had Harvey and the doctors keep telling me I need to go for a check-up because it’s caused by stress which I’ve had a lot of lately.”
That same year she clashed with Jade Goody after she criticised the dying Big Brother star for selling stories about her battle with cervical cancer.
“I feel sorry for anyone who is going through what Jade is going through but I can’t believe she is paid for interviews on subjects that people are really traumatised by,” she sniped.
Their mutual friend Kerry Katona waded into the fray, backing Jade.
“Jordan is totally wrong on this one,” she told the Daily Mail.
“Jade has already saved many lives with her tireless charity work and the more she sends that important message of cancer awareness, she deserves nothing but credit.”
And Jade herself hit back, branding Katie a “hypocrite”.
“I think for her to sit there on her throne and look down at other people is a bit rich,” the late star said.
“She’s a hypocrite to be so judgmental. Her mistakes have been overlooked now but there are people out there who remember.”
The women buried the hatchet before Jade’s passing, with Katie apologising and explaining she didn’t realise how ill Jade actually was.
