Kate Garraway tells Piers Morgan her 'world went dark' when husband was struck down with covid

Kate Garraway has revealed how lonely she is caring for her coronavirus-stricken husband at home.

Derek Draper, who remains the UK’s worst affected patient, was released from hospital in April after a 13-month battle against the Covid-19 virus.

The GMTV star said: “I want him there and I want him back. But his presence reminds me of his absence. So you can feel very lonely.”

She tells Piers Morgan in his ITV Life Stories series tonight that her life has split into two parts – before former Labour party spin doctor Derek, 54, got the virus in March 2020 and after.

The mum of two said: “The world went dark and I’m still looking for the light at the end of the tunnel really.

“It [the virus ] has devastated him. From the top of his head to the tip of his toes.

“His digestive system, his liver, his kidneys, his heart, his nervous system. We are pretty sure that the inflammation passed through the brain. He still can’t communicate. He has issues with mobility. Fundamentally he is in a terrible state. But look, he’s alive.”

Kate, 54, told how she misses her “brilliant, loyal, ludicrous” husband whom she has been married to for 16 years. The couple have two children – Darcey, 15, and William, 12.

The show also focused on Kate’s lengthy career as a broadcaster including some of the biggest stories of the last decade.

She told him how deeply affected she was covering the abduction of three-year-old Madeleine McCann who disappeared in Portugal in 2003 not long after she became a mother herself. She was on the GMTV sofa when one of Gerry and Kate McCann’s friends called the show to plead for help after the toddler went missing. Kate said: “That call was devastating. It was a cry for help.”

The presenter also revealed that she once dated a performer who has now gone on to become a big star. But she refused to name him. She said: “What I can say is that he dumped me.”

Next year Kate will take over doing ITV’s Life Stories series from Piers and has a big list of people she’d love to get to talk to.

Piers has stepped down from the position after working on the show for 12 years and appearing in more than 100 episodes.

●Piers Morgan’s Life Stories airs tonight at 8pm on STV and ITV Hub.
