Kate Garraway has opened up about the ‘hardest time of her life’ as husband Derek Draper battles coronavirus.

The Good Morning Britain star’s partner was recently rushed to hospital with symptoms, and is still in a deeply critical condition in intensive care.

And, penning a candid blog post on her Club Garraway site, the 52-year-old spoke out about the ‘worrying time’ her family is facing.

‘You may have seen the news over the last couple of weeks and seen that my husband Derek has been seriously ill in hospital with Covid-19,’ she began. ‘I am afraid that he remains in a critical condition and is very ill.

‘It remains an extremely worrying time for us all and the last couple of weeks have been the hardest of my life. The NHS team who are working on him have all been extraordinary and I know that it’s only their professionalism, dedication and bravery that has kept Derek with us so far.

‘It is so difficult to find the right words because “thank you“ alone just doesn’t seem enough but I do thank them with all my heart as I know Derek would want to also if he could.’

Kate also thanked those who had sent supportive messages, explaining that she had taken time in ‘quieter moments’ to read them all.

Reaching out to those in similar situations, the mum-of-two continued: ’I want to send a message of love and support to all of you going through this. You are not alone.

‘We must all stand together and support each other and I am praying to be able to be talking with you soon with some positive news.

‘This is an absolutely heartbreaking and emotionally draining time for so many of us.’

Recalling what had helped her to cope, she added: ‘Staying grounded in the present moment, trying to remember to take care of myself even though I haven’t felt like it, to stay strong for Derek and my family, accepting help from others (something I usually find hard!) and doing some practical things to distract myself and feel like I am moving forward.’

Derek, 52, has been battling coronavirus in intensive care after being taken to hospital on 30 March.

Kate offered an update on his condition on Thursday, during the weekly #ClapForCarers – which she took part in alongside their two children, William and Darcey.

‘He is still critically ill in intensive care, but where there is life there is hope,’ she told fans on Instagram.

‘Thank you #nhs from the bottom of my heart . Thank you too for all your wonderful messages and advice of how to get through this.’

Fans and close friends have been sharing their support for the Garraway family – with Jacqueline Jossa revealing she had reached out to her I’m A Celebrity co-star.

Doctor Hilary Jones also heaped on Kate during her tough time on Friday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain, telling Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins: ‘I have to say, Kate is being incredibly strong.

‘She’s very conscious that she’s not the only one in this situation and she has sent her love and support to everybody else whose loved ones are critically as well.

‘She’s being very pragmatic, very strong, at a very difficult time.

‘Everybody sends lots of love and support to her and are keeping their fingers crossed for Derek.’
