Kate Garraway has celebrated the bittersweet moment she was able to head out to ‘something’ with her kids since her husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with Covid last year.

The author battled the illness in intensive care for a year and was able to return home in April, however he suffered from rare brain inflammation and the virus attacked his lungs, heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas, so he continues to receive around-the-clock care.

Sharing a sweet selfie with their children, Darcey, 15, and Billy, 12, at a show they were set to attend with Derek, Kate detailed the emotional evening, after she was earlier snapped on the red carpet at the opening night of Wonderville, a new magic and illusion show, at the Palace Theatre in London.

Alongside her kids on Instagram, she wrote on Tuesday evening: ‘Well this was a moment – the first time the kids & I have been out to “something” other than school or work since Derek got sick.

‘It was a magic show we were supposed to be heading to when he was rushed into hospital – and we felt strange that we were going out to one when he isn’t ready to – YET.

‘But it was so wonderful to see Darcey and Billy enthralled and mystified and enraptured – the magic of life returning. And I know that’s what Derek wants too.

‘It was unnerving to be with so many people after so long and the kids were wide eyed and more than a little disorientated to be in the centre of London with all the buzz but excited too.

‘I couldn’t believe my eyes welled up at the spirit and celebration and pure joy of the performers getting the chance to entertain again – magic back in the west end and in our lives 🤞🤞🤞🤞. @wondervillelive runs @thepalacetheatre til the end of August – catch it if you can and if not [hope] you can find some magic in the madness. See you on @gmb from 6 a.m. [sic]’

On the red carpet Kate admitted that it was ‘strange’ attending the event without her husband Derek.

She said: ‘It’s our first time out since February 2020 so we are really excited, and this is a date that has sprung up because it was going to happen a few weeks ago and then it didn’t happen and then we just thought, “Let’s go for it” – so very exciting.

‘It was very strange leaving [Derek] tonight to come out because he is a big fan of magic, but it is not possible at the moment so we just said next time and see him when we get back.’

Kate has been keeping followers up to date with Derek’s recovery, recently explaining that while there are definitely some positives, there are still ‘huge challenges ahead’.

She recently said on Good Morning Britain: ‘He’s very up and down. We’re certainly a long way out of the woods.’

The presenter added: ‘Being home has meant we’ve seen some things improve, definitely having the family around, having the children around has provided stimulation and the problem is you latch onto the positives – which is good, because you have to.

‘But there’s absolutely no doubt that there’s huge challenges ahead.’
