Speculation is mounting that Manchester United are intending to make a move for Kalvin Phillips. but his agent and manager at Leeds United have played down any talk of a move.

The 25-year-old, who has only ever played for Leeds, has seen his reputation grow rapidly since the Yorkshire side arrived in the Premier League last year.

The midfielder has become a fixture in the England team under Gareth Southgate, winning Men’s Player of the Year for 2020-21 when the Three Lions made it all the way to the final of Euro 2020.

Unsurprisingly, Phillips has been linked with a move to a bigger club, with Manchester United touted as the most interested party, but his agent is talking up the possibility of a new contract at Elland Road.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Kevin Sharp said: ‘I’ve had positive discussions with Leeds throughout the summer on a new contract for Kalvin and talks are ongoing.

‘I can only see a positive outcome. Kalvin’s desire is to stay at Leeds and there is a real willingness from all sides to make it happen.’

Phillips’ current contract already runs until 2024, but that could be extended further and likely improved considerably.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has been typically less straightforward with his assessment, although made it clear that he would have no desire to let Phillips go.

The Argentine does admit that it would be rare for a player to reject a big move to stay at the club he grew up with, but hopes that what happens.

‘That’s a question Kalvin needs to answer,’ Bielsa said of the Phillips speculation. ‘Of course for us he’s a very valuable player. We have to adapt ourselves to how he feels belonging to Leeds.

‘I have seen in him the conduct I have very rarely seen in a player.

‘In how football is right now, for a player to decline a team above the level where he is at, due to the love of a club where he is at, is not frequent.

‘I have the certainty Kalvin is going to enjoy for the rest of his life decisions like the one he made. He will be loved for always in the place he was born and where he belongs.’
