Jurgen Klopp believes criticism of Mohamed Salah after he won a penalty against West Ham was ‘unfair’ and that there was ‘clear contact’ from Arthur Masuaku.

Salah won a penalty late in the first half against the Hammers, which he dispatched to draw his side level after Pablo Fornals opener.

A late winner from summer signing Diogo Jota saw defending champions Liverpool return to the top of the Premier League, despite conceding 15 goals in their opening seven games.

Salah came in for some hefty criticism after the match.

David Moyes, the West Ham manager, was convinced it was a ‘dive’ that won a penalty, while former West Ham striker Carlton Cole branded the Egyptian a ‘top actor’ who put in an ‘Oscar-winning performance’.

But Klopp insists the winger did not dive and that he has a ‘proper knock’ on his foot from the challenge.

Asked if he thought the criticism of Salah was fair, Klopp replied: ‘No.

‘I don’t know what people need to – look, it was a foul. It was pretty much by everyone who saw the situation.

‘Believe it or not, yesterday morning I spoke to Mo about how he feels and he has exactly three proper knocks on the foot and one of them was from the penalty situation.

‘That’s how it is. There was a knock, you go down and whatever. Sometimes the refs whistle…

‘We don’t talk that long about penalties we don’t get in other games. There was clear contact.

‘What can I say? No, I don’t understand the criticism.’
