Jurgen Klopp gives honest opinion on Joe Gomez and Joel Matip partnership

Jurgen Klopp is confident Joe Gomez and Joel Matip can establish a formidable centre-back partnership in the absence of injured star Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool received a huge blow to their defensive options as Van Dijk suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Everton.

The Reds have been left with just two senior natural centre-backs in Matip and Gomez, though the pair have never started a game together.

Nonetheless, Klopp backed the duo to step up in Van Dijk’s absence as he previewed Liverpool’s Saturday night clash with Sheffield United.

“The reason for (Gomez and Matip never starting together) is because I think Virg played pretty much all the games and one of them was injured,” said the Reds boss.

But Jurgen Klopp will have to opt for the 4-3-3 formation
Klopp is turning to his other centre-backs to shine in Van Dijk’s absence

“As long as Dejan Lovren was still here and Dejan was in that moment fit (he would play).

“I didn’t know they had never played together, I didn’t know that, but they can play together – not a shadow of a doubt.

“As I said for the Fabinho and Joe pairing, they need to get used to each other and the full-backs need to get used to them.

With Van Dijk injured, who should start in central defence for Liverpool? Have your say here.

Surprisingly, Gomez and Matip have never started the same game for Liverpool

“The more stability you have in this line, the better. We never had that really, especially one position was always with a lot of changes. They will fight together, there is no doubt about that.

“It is football and it didn’t become rocket science overnight. We can help them with information but then they will get tested every three days, that’s the situation.”

Matip is facing a late fitness test ahead of the visit of the Blades, while Klopp may choose to start Fabinho in central defence alongside Gomez after the pair kept a clean sheet during the 1-0 win at Ajax on Wednesday.
