Jose Mourinho’s Gareth Bale snub questioned by Tottenham players

Seveal of Tottenham’s most senior players have been ‘surprised’ by Jose Mourinho’s reluctance to utilise Gareth Bale this season.

The Wales international returned to north London in the summer after seven highly eventful years with Real Madrid. Bale’s homecoming was greeted with a huge fanfare yet it has been anything but a glorious homecoming.

Bale has made 12 appearances in all competitions, but only four of those have come in the Premier League, while he has started only once since September.

Mourinho overlooked the former Southampton star for selection against the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, while the Special One, according to ESPN, was said to have been perturbed by his display in last month’s defeat against Leicester.

Bale was again ignored on Wednesday night when, with Spurs looking for a late winner against Fulham, Mourinho brought on Erik Lamala and Carlos Vinicius rather than summoning Bale from the substitutes’ bench.

The Times, meanwhile, report that, given the lack of impact he has made over the course of the first half of the campaign, Spurs are unlikely to take up the option of taking Bale on loan again next season.

Speaking on Bale’s fitness, Mourinho said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to Sheffield United: ‘Of course you know he arrived injured for the first month and the Europa League group phase is a different intensity so in the Premier League didn’t play a lot of minutes.

‘Then an injury against Stoke where he was having a good first half. Not an easy process.

‘Was not a second of discussion about that [since he arrived]. Gareth is a player on loan until the end of the season. Not one second of discussion. We are talking about Gareth himself, Real Madrid, Tottenham.’
