Jose Mourinho believes England will play a five-man defence for their Euro 2020 last-16 clash with Germany.

Gareth Southgate’s side finished top of Group D following their 1-0 victory over Czech Republic at Wembley on Tuesday evening.

The Three Lions will now face Germany in their first match of the knockout phase after Joachim Low’s side finished second in a tough Group F containing France, Portugal and Hungary.

Harry Maguire returned from injury for England’s final group game and Mourinho believes the Manchester United captain should keep his place with Southgate picking three central defenders for the last-16 tie against Germany at Wembley next Tuesday.

‘I keep saying when you have an option to take 26 players, you have to risk, gamble and take an injured player if the player deserves that,’ Mourinho told talkSPORT.

‘Maguire is one of those players. He was confident, he was stable, he was intelligent [against the Czech Republic].

‘He read the game well and he has a good partnership with Stones.

‘Mings is doing a fantastic job, you could feel he was happy to come in for 10 or 15 minutes, he is a team player.

‘I wouldn’t be surprised if the next game is against Germany, the way they play with Havertz, Muller and Gnabry, three defenders and two wings backs, I wouldn’t be surprised if England went with three at the back – Stones, Maguire and Mings.’
