Jose Mourinho apologises to Eric Dier for substituting him after 29 minutes


Jose Mourinho publicly apologised to Eric Dier for hooking him after just 29 minutes against Olympiacos.

New Tottenham manager Mourinho substituted midfielder Dier in the first half after watching his side slide to a 2-0 deficit – with Cristian Eriksen replacing him.

The decision worked for the Portuguese as Spurs sparked an impressive second half comeback to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Dele Alli pulled one back on the cusp of half time as he capitalised on a defensive howler.

Before Harry Kane became the quickest player to score 20 goals in the Champions League with a tap-in and a header, either side of right back Serge Aurier’s stunning strike.

But Mourinho made sure his first words in his press conference was to say sorry to Dier for the ignominy for being taken off so early.

“The first thing I want to say, is to apologise to Eric Dier,” Mourinho said. “It’s not easy for him, and for the staff. It was for the team and to find a solution.

“It was never going to be easy, it was about the team and never the individuals.”

Captain Kane was happy to beat Italian legend Alessandro del Piero’s European record but was frustrated at his side’s start to the match.

“Not a bad player to beat,” Kane told BT Sport. “It was about qualifying, no matter how we did it but we had to win and we did that. We can enjoy it and try and deep the momentum for Saturday.

“It was a disappointing start, we know that and did not come out with any energy and they got the two goals and put us under pressure, it was an uphill struggle but we go the goals and it feels good to qualify.

“We needed to be calm especially after scoring. We did not have to rush it and we had a bit of freedom and enjoy it a bit more.”
