Premier League leaders Chelsea had to come from behind to share the points against Manchester United in an entertaining 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Jadon Sancho scored his second goal of the season after Jorginho miscontrolled a long ball but the Italian soon made amends by converting from the penalty spot.

United were lucky not to find themselves a goal down after just three minutes with some awful defending from Victor Lindelof seeing Callum Hudson-Odoi through on goal but David de Gea made himself big to deny the attacker from close range.

With Cristiano Ronaldo watching on from the bench, Bruno Fernandes played in a front three alongside Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford but all three saw very little of the ball in the early stages.

As Chelsea’s attacking stars continued to push for a way through United’s defence, defender Antonio Rudiger took matters into his own hands on the half hour mark as he hammered a fierce effort from outside the box that rattled the cross bar, De Gea getting his fingertips to the ball.

United headed into the break with just 32% possession having registered just one shot to Chelsea’s 10 efforts but Carrick was sticking to his guns and no substitutes were introduced at half-time.

The visitors soon found themselves a goal up as Jorginho’s poor touch from a United clearance saw Sancho break with the ball on the counter-attack and keep his composure to calmy slot past Edouard Mendy.

Sancho had Marcus Rashford alongside him in support as the pair raced towards Mendy’s goal but he chose the more difficult option by shooting himself to bag his second goal in as many games.

Not long after the former Borussia Dortmund winger was taken off as Ronaldo came on with just under half an hour to go.

On 68 minutes Jorginho made amends for his earlier error as he converted from the penalty spot after Aaron Wan-Bissaka clumsily kicked Thiago Silva’s leg when trying to clear the ball in the box.

Chelsea continued to press for a winner in the late stages with Timo Werner’s goal-bound effort looking set to be decisive until Wan-Bissaka made a crucial block with his foot to deny the German.

Rudiger spurned a late effort from close range but Thomas Tuchel’s side remain a point clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.
