Jorge Mendes offers Man Utd chief Ed Woodward Edinson Cavani alternative

Manchester United chairman Ed Woodward will be offered the chance to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Andre Silva for around £30million in the summer transfer window, but any move will hinge on the departure of Edinson Cavani, according to reports. The Red Devils are said to be in the market for the veteran’s long-term replacement, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the campaign.

There is an option to extend Cavani’s stay at Old Trafford by a further year, but United are yet to take action and could see him leave for nothing in the summer.

His departure could spark a transfer merry-go-round involving United, Frankfurt and Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Notorious super-agent Jorge Mendes, who represents Silva, is hoping to engineer a move for his client to join the Red Devils before the start of next season, according to The Sun.

A new striker and a left-footed centre-back are firmly at the top of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s wishlist for the summer transfer window.

As a result of the financial uncertainty caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Silva could make the switch for as little as £30m.

Frankfurt are trying to raise the funds needed to secure the permanent return of Madrid outcast Luka Jovic, with the Serb currently on loan at the Bundesliga outfit.

Silva’s sale would allow them to begin conversations with the defending La Liga champions, but the report states that the three-way move will ultimately be decided by United’s stance on Cavani.

If Woodward opts against extending the striker’s deal, he could well be tempted to work with Mendes with a view to bringing Silva to the club.

The 25-year-old has taken to life in the Bundesliga like a duck to water, finding the net on 18 occasions in just 20 matches this season, a tally that puts him among the division’s top scorers behind only Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski.

He has been linked with a move to the Premier League on a regular basis since joining AC Milan from Porto four years ago.

Both Wolves, who have reaped the benefits of their links with Mendes in recent seasons, and West Ham United have been mooted as potential destinations for Silva.

However, United appear to have emerged as the prime contenders for his signature amid the uncertainty over Cavani’s future.

The Red Devils have also been tipped to launch a big-money move for Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland in recent months.

The German heavyweights are said to be weighing up the possibility of allowing either the Norway international or Jadon Sancho to leave as a result of their own financial concerns.

It remains to be seen whether Woodward will sanction a huge three-figure bid for Haaland or go for the cheaper option in Silva.

Solskjaer revealed earlier this month that United are already planning their summer transfer activity, but suggested that the pandemic could pour cold water on their hopes of making expensive approaches.

“I still think we’re doing the same planning, preparation,” the United boss told reporters.

“But, of course, the pandemic has changed the market and it’s changed the world and it might affect what we can do.

“We just have to see where we’re at in the next few months but we’re looking at players and targets as we normally would do.

“We have done some very good business in the last few windows, I feel, and it’s not like wholesale changes we need to make. It’s the odd contribution and addition to the squad.”
