Jones calls on critics to ease up on Robshaw in wake of England's Covid KO

Eddie Jones has urged the public to lay off Chris Robshaw – despite him being one of the players responsible for the cancellation of England’s only warm-up game.

The former England captain was among a group of Barbarians who breached Covid-19 protocols by leaving their biosecure bubble for an evening out ahead of the game.

The cash-crippled RFU ruled that the England players’ safety could not be guaranteed and pulled the plug on a £1 million pay day.

Jones likened the sudden loss of the fixture to the cancellation of last year’s England-France World Cup game in Tokyo due to Typhoon Hagibis.

“This was just a bit of a different typhoon,” he said.

Asked by Sky Sports News about Robshaw’s involvement he added: “If Chris was involved I’m sure he’d be sorry for his actions.

“He’s a good young man, he’s served his country well so let’s make sure we don’t take it out on him too badly.”

The abandonment of the fixture left England with a blank weekend but Jones revealed: “I didn’t get involved in the emotion of what happened.

“I’ve been around a while so I just accepted it and quickly went up to my room and worked out a Plan B.”

He added: “We’ve told our players they’ve got to be responsible, they’ve got a responsibility to their team-mate, to their family, to English rugby.

“They all understand that right at this moment. And then there could be a moment when they don’t understand it.

“All we can do is try to keep creating the right environment for them to understand their responsibility.”
