John Barnes says Man Utd teammates are to blame for Harry Maguire’s struggles

John Barnes insists the criticism put on Harry Maguire isn’t his own fault as he needs more help from his teammates.

The Manchester United captain has come in for plenty of criticism in recent weeks ever since he returned from injury for the 4-2 defeat to Leicester last month.

The Red Devils have struggled for clean sheets all season with David de Gea coming to his side’s rescue on numerous occasions.

While Maguire’s displays for England have been impressive, his performances for his club have been well below par that even led to Roy Keane mocking him with a robot impression.

But Liverpool hero Barnes insists the way United have been playing has left the defence exposed, suggesting United’s attacking players need to contribute more defensively.

‘Harry Maguire is absolutely the right man to be Manchester United captain,’ Barnes told BonusCodeBets .

‘He’s playing in a back four that aren’t being protected. If Liverpool’s front three didn’t work as hard off the ball, the back four would also struggle.

‘It’s not about any individual defender because Harry Maguire is a good defender, as are Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw.

‘But the problem is, they’re just being left to defend when the rest of the team doesn’t apart from Fred and Scott McTominay who also need more hard done work in front of them.

‘So, I don’t criticise Maguire at all because he’s a good defender for Manchester United and England but the way the team is playing, he’s being left to defend on his own which he can’t do so I don’t blame him at all.’

United’s defence will have their work cut out on Sunday when they visit Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Caretaker boss Michael Carrick will be in charge before, as is widely reported, former RB Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick is appointed as interim manager.
