Liverpool legend John Barnes believes his former side will struggle to attract attacking players in January because they won’t be guaranteed a start.

The Reds have not been short of goals this season and bagged four against rivals Everton on Wednesday night with Mo Salah netting twice.

Salah, along with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane has been Jurgen Klopp’s preferred front three in recent seasons but Diogo Jota has also made things competitive up front since his arrival from Wolves in the summer.

Jota and Divock Origi will be in line for more game time in January when Mane and Salah head off to the African Cup of Nations but Barnes says Liverpool won’t be able to sign a decent forward because they know they’ll be on the bench upon their return.

‘Liverpool don’t need to sign another attacking player because they still have Jota, Origi, Firmino,’ Barnes told BonusCodeBets.

‘There are other players who can fill in for a short space of time. In January you won’t get better than what you have.

‘You won’t sign a player for £60m or £70m in January who is better than what you have.

‘It’s not just about getting someone while Salah and Mane are away.

‘Who’s going to come in and be a huge player for Liverpool while knowing that, when Salah and Mane come back, they’re going to be on the bench.’

One player who has been tentatively linked with a move to Anfield is Wolves winger Adama Traore.

Barnes says he’d be ‘great acquisition’ to Klopp’s squad but can’t see him being happy sat on the bench.

‘Adama Traore could be a good addition to the squad but he’s not going to play ahead of Salah, Mane, Jota or Firmino,’ he added.

‘If he wants to come to Liverpool that would be great but he’ll come knowing he’s not going to play regularly.

‘It would be a great acquisition for the squad. But I can’t see him making that decision.’
