Joe Cole says Thiago Silva has been a ‘fantastic signing’ for Chelsea and believes there is ‘no reason’ why the club should opt against extending the defender’s stay beyond the summer.

Eyebrows were raised when Chelsea landed Silva, 37, on a free transfer in August 2020 given the Brazilian had reached the twilight years of his career, but his classy performances at the heart of Thomas Tuchel’s defence have silenced those doubters.

Silva has picked up where he left off this season after playing a key role in Chelsea’s Champions League success last term, with the Blues sitting one point clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table ahead of their meeting with West Ham this weekend.

There remains uncertainty over Silva’s future, though, with the ex-Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan star’s current contract due to expire at the end of the campaign.

Silva is believed to be open to the idea of staying on for another year at Stamford Bridge and Cole – speaking on BT Sport – urged his former side to tie the veteran centre-back down for a further 12 months.

‘There’s a lot of youthful and aggressive players around him and he’s been a fantastic signing,’ the ex-Chelsea and England winger said ahead of Saturday lunchtime’s London derby in which Silva opened the scoring.

‘There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be given another one-year deal because he’s been outstanding.

‘When he plays in the centre of a three, having the system where the wing-backs are high, he has so many options and when you’ve got a player with a range of passing like Thiago Silva he’s going to look unbelievable.

‘He’s got the left wing-back, the right wing-back and he’s got options in midfield.

‘He’s probably having the time of his career and he’s 37, it’s unbelievable.’

Legendary ex-Manchester United and England centre-half Rio Ferdinand joined Cole in waxing lyrical about Silva’s impact, describing the Brazil international as the ‘glue’ in Chelsea’s defence.

‘Defenders have got to defend, it’s knowing when to go in there, tackle and engage and he does that as well as anyone,’ Ferdinand said.

‘He’s that glue in the backline that keeps everybody together.

‘You’ve got young players, aggressive players around him and you need that calmness. He is that.’

Gianfranco Zola, meanwhile, highlighted Silva the ‘maturity’ Silva had shown in adapting his game in his twilight years.

‘As you grow older, of course, physically you go down a little bit, but you compensate the lack of the performance physically with a much greater knowledge of the game,’ the iconic ex-Chelsea forward said.

‘You do things more efficiently, everything you do is the right thing. It seems everything you do on the pitch is the right thing.

‘But this comes with a lot of maturity, a lot of intelligence and he’s got both of those things.’
