Joe Cole believes Manchester United have ‘deep-rooted’ issues and can see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side succumbing to defeat against in-form Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday.

The Red Devils have struggled for consistency this season and are in 10th place in the table after losing three of their first eight league games.

United’s board faced criticism for failing to get a deal for top target Jadon Sancho over the line back in the last transfer window.

Meanwhile, £40million summer signing Donny van de Beek has played a bit-part role at Old Trafford this season and is yet to start a Premier League game.

Former Chelsea winger Cole questioned United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward’s transfer strategy and predicted that the pressure will continue to mount on Solskjaer with a loss to fifth-placed Southampton this weekend.

‘It’s a massive game for Solskjaer,’ Cole said on Coral and JOE Media’s All to Play For podcast.

‘The problems for Manchester United are deep-rooted. You look at Ed Woodward and the decisions made on transfers.

‘Ole seems like such a lovely fella and you want him to go well but I think Southampton could do it, they’re the form team.

‘You need to put the history of the club behind. This is not the Manchester United we know, this is a new team.

‘I love watching Southampton and I’m going for them this weekend.’

United have been much more impressive in Europe than domestically and took one step closer to qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages with a 4-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir in midweek.

The Red Devils need just a draw against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday to secure their place in the next round of the competition.
