Joe Cole suggested Frank Lampard had a selection dilemma on his hands after Chelsea stretched to seven matches unbeaten in all competitions with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Rennes.

Timo Werner gave Chelsea a two-goal advantage with a pair of first-half penalties at Stamford Bridge before Tammy Abraham directed home Reece James’ cross to put the hosts out of sight in Wednesday’s one-sided Champions League Group E clash.

It was just the fourth time Abraham had led the line with Werner and the Englishman seized his opportunity, becoming the first player to find the net in three consecutive Champions League starts for Chelsea since Willian back in 2015.

Meanwhile, Werner’s double meant he has been directly involved in 13 goals (ten goals, three assists) in his last 14 appearances in the competition for the Blues and previous club Leipzig.

Lampard also has the likes of Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech and Olivier Giroud battling it out for places in Chelsea’s attack when all are fit.

On Abraham strengthening his case for a regular starting spot, ex-Chelsea star Cole told BT Sport: ‘It would have been noted, Chelsea spending £50m on a No.9.

‘He [Abraham] kept at it tonight, didn’t he? His movement for the goal was lovely.

‘He didn’t do it in the first half, there was a time when he picked the wrong run but that was excellent.

‘It was a good finish. He’s had to take that on the half volley, open his body up, it’s not easy so it’s a nice one for Tammy.

‘It’s a great problem for Frank because he’s got so many players now making a case.

‘All of the front boys are scoring, midfielders are getting on the ball, he’s given Frank something to think about.’

Cole was particularly impressed with the performance James produced in Chelsea’s win and said it would be ‘interesting’ to see how Gareth Southgate makes room for him, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker in his England plans.

‘I’ve always known the lad’s talent but he’s taken to professional first-team elite football like a duck to water,’ Cole added.

‘His technique and his ability to put it on a sixpence anywhere from anywhere sort of 30 yards near the goal, he can put it where he wants. His right foot is that good.

‘It’s going to be interesting trying to shoehorn him into a team with Trent [Alexander-Arnold], with Kyle [Walker], we’ve got so many great right-backs.

‘But he’s got the ability to play in two or three different positions, like the other two have as well.

‘We have an abundance of talent.’
