Jimmy White believes this could be the week that John Higgins end his Triple Crown drought and win the UK Championship in Milton Keynes.

The Wizard of Wishaw is into the last 16 after a 6-2 win over Jak Jones on Monday afternoon, which followed victories over Fergal O’Brien and Gerard Greene.

The Scot has won the UK Championship three times but has not been beyond the quarter-finals since he last lifted the trophy in 2010.

A four-time world champion and double Masters champion, Higgins has won it all, but he has not lifted a Triple Crown title since his last World Championship glory in 2011.

White believes now is the time for the 45-year-old to put that right and feels his clearance of 72 to win the opening frame against Jones, after the Welshman made 62, showed his game is in the right place.

‘I think, the way you started off this match, cleared up, typical John Higgins, from 60-odd behind to win that frame,’ White said on Eurosport.

‘For me, I think you’re really playing well, you’re happy with your game and your practice game.

‘I think you’re well overdue to win one of these Triple Crowns and I think this could be the week.’

White feels Higgins’ shot choice and ability to scrap when not at his best will always make him a threat in events, talents he has shown for the last 25 years.

‘That’s how good John Higgins is, not only is he one of the greats, he’s probably, besides Steve Davis, he’s the person who always players the right shot, whatever the situation in the match,’ said the Whirlwind.

‘He seems to win a lot of matches when he plays second best and that’s the art of him being a winner.’

The Wizard is still driven for success in the game as he looks for his first ranking title since the 2018 Welsh Open and would love to claim a fourth UK title on Sunday.

‘I would love to, I can’t remember the last time, it would have been about 10 years ago,’ said HIggins of his last Triple Crown win.

‘They’re unbelievable players who win these big events, Triple Crowns, 10 years is a long time so I’d dearly love to [win another one].’

Higgins takes on Zhou Yuelong in the last 16.
