Departing Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng feels Timo Werner enjoyed a ‘positive’ debut season at Chelsea and expects the forward to show his true self at Euro 2020 for Germany.

The 25-year-old joined the Blues from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2020 in a deal worth £47.5million following a prolific season in the Bundesliga.

Werner netted 28 goals in 34 games in Germany’s top flight in the 2019/20 campaign but was unable to get near those numbers in the Premier League.

Midfielder Jorginho ended the season as Chelsea’s top scorer in the league on seven goals, all coming from the penalty spot, while Werner managed a total of six, with 12 assists.

The Germany international was criticised for a lack of composure which saw him miss multiple big chances in front of goal.

However, German World Cup winner Boateng, who is leaving Bayern this summer after 10 years at the club, has backed Werner to learn a lot from his first season at Chelsea and feels people will see another version of the forward at the Euros.

‘Timo has changed country, club, playing in a new league,’ Boateng told BILD. ‘It is not so easy.

‘Nonetheless, he scored his goals, provided assists, was present, went through a hollow and came out and now he’s the Champions League winner.’

‘For me, it has been a positive season with the usual ups and downs,’ he added. ‘It makes him bigger and stronger and he learns from it.

‘At the Euros, we will see another Timo Werner, a hungry Timo. A Timo with more arrogance, because he has just won the Champions League.

‘It carries you. He will show who he really is.’
