Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has insisted that Christian Eriksen ‘loves’ playing for the club despite speculation linking the playmaker with a move away this summer.

Eriksen is entering the final year of his contract with Spurs and admitted that he was open to a new challenge in June amid reported interest in him from Real Madrid, amongst others.

The 27-year-old stated that a move to Real Madrid would be a ‘step up’ from Spurs but hinted that he could be open to signing a new contract should no suitable offers be forthcoming.

With three weeks remaining in the transfer window, Spurs are yet to receive an offer for the Denmark international and Vertonghen is hopeful his teammate will stay put.

Vertonghen, who is also out of contract at the end of the season, said: ‘I have got everything I want here. For me, it’s the best club to play for at the moment, definitely.

‘I love being here, my family loves it, I love it. I feel great with the fans, great with the manager. He’s been supporting me and making me a better player over the last five or six years.

‘Christian loves it here but I can’t speak for him. I think we’ve got a great club and from what I can see, everyone is happy to be here.’

Eriksen joined Spurs from Ajax in 2013 – a year after Vertonghen had made the same move – and has gone on to become an integral player in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Over the past six seasons, Eriksen has scored 66 goals in 277 appearances for Spurs and Pochettino admitted that there is interest in him from elsewhere.

When asked whether Eriksen would stay, Pochettino replied: ‘I think he is a great player, Christian. One of the biggest talents in football. After five years working with him, I am sure in the way that he plays, and I hope so yes.

‘But you know, there is a lot of interest. I hope yes, but I don’t know what is going to happen with that.’
