Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool will be unable to pull clear of Manchester City despite Pep Guardiola’s side suffering from an injury crisis in defence.

The Premier League champions will be without Aymeric Laporte for six months due to injury, while John Stones will be sidelined for around five weeks.

Liverpool are two points clear of City but could extend their advantage to five points if they beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Carragher, however, has warned his former side that they will need to beat City when they face Guardiola’s men at Anfield in November.

Asked if he believes Liverpool could pull clear of City in the title race in the coming weeks, Carragher told Sky Sports: ‘I don’t think out of sight.

‘I still think it’s really early, I think that was an experience for Liverpool last season at certain times when they had a five-point lead in January or February.

‘But it’s still so long to go.

‘What I think is Liverpool have got to target the City game, the first game City go to Anfield.

‘Last season that game was a draw. Liverpool had had a really tough run of fixtures and they sort of fell into that game and they were hanging on to the draw.

‘They’d had a tough run of games and they couldn’t really go for City.

‘I think the situation that City are in defensively in a few weeks when that game comes up, they [Liverpool] have to go and win that game.

‘You think about winning the title, and I said it last year, how many teams can beat City?

‘Okay, we’ve seen it last week [with Norwich City], it was a bit of a freak, let’s be honest, it won’t happen too often this season.

‘But if Liverpool want to go and win the title they are the team who are going to have to take points off City, because not many teams will, if they’ve shown the form they have over the last couple of years.’
