Jamie Carragher accused Rio Ferdinand of wanting to turn his back on Manchester United and join Chelsea in pursuit of silverware during the latter stage his career, amid an escalating row between the Premier League legends.

Liverpool stalwart Carragher became embroiled in a heated debate with Ferdinand’s former club captain, Roy Keane, during Sky Sports’ post match coverage of Sunday’s Stamford Bridge stalemate between United and the current league leaders.

Carragher argued that United’s decision to sign Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer has done little to enhance their chances of winning the Premier League title and claimed the 36-year-old, who started on the bench yesterday, might not fit in under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

He said: ‘Why did Manchester United sign Ronaldo in the summer? They signed him because they were terrified he was going to go to Man City. That’s why they signed him.

‘There was no plan to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. They signed him at the last minute because he was going to go to Man City.

‘I’m saying is a Manchester United manager not allowed to put Ronaldo on the bench? They’ve come here to Stamford Bridge and the guy that’s played has scored the goal.

‘Where are Manchester United in the league? Are United any closer to winning the Premier League? That’s what he’s been brought back for.’

Asked for his reaction to Carragher’s Ronaldo verdict, Ferdinand argued his opinion should not be taken seriously given he failed to win a single Premier League title during his top flight career.

He told Vibe with Five: ‘Carra shouldn’t really be talking about winning leagues. He never did it, he didn’t know how to do it. He’s never navigated a team through it to that point to win a league.

‘I find it very difficult when he speaks with such conviction about winning leagues. You should stick to cup competitions. The moment he talks about leagues I just mute it.’

Refusing to back down, Carragher responded on Twitter, pointing out Ferdinand’s role in Ronaldo’s United return and revealing the 43-year-old tried to engineer a transfer to Chelsea when the going got tough at Old Trafford.

‘Not talking titles but the deal for Ronaldo to Man Utd which you arranged,’ he wrote on Twitter.

‘No Premier League for me but Sky like my opinions! No trophy in your career without Alex Ferguson and when you stopped winning the Premier League at Manchester United you tried to move to Chelsea, so please stop giving it the big Man United fan one!’
