Jamie Carragher says Liverpool’s stand-in centre-back Rhys Williams offers the aerial presence that Fabinho and Joe Gomez can’t provide.

The Reds’ injury problems at the back have been piling up after Virgil van Dijk’s serious knee injury and Fabinho’s hamstring problem suffered in Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory over Midtjylland.

Joel Matip has been suffering with a leg problem and also missed the Midtjylland clash, leaving Jurgen Klopp with very limited options.

19-year-old Williams was thrown in and could be called upon again if Matip doesn’t return in time for Saturday’s Premier League match against West Ham.

Though Liverpool legend Carragher believes that Williams’ big 6ft 5ins frame can help provide the proficiency in the air that Klopp’s other options at centre-back can’t.

‘It’s a huge problem for Liverpool,’ Carragher told CBS. ‘Matip was touch and go for this game. Whether he will be back for West Ham, I am not sure.

‘The young lad Rhys Williams came back and actually did well tonight. What he does give you is a great size and great aerial ability that Fabinho or Joe Gomez don’t give you.

‘I think everyone will have their fingers crossed that Matip is back for the game at the weekend for West Ham.

‘Then maybe the Atalanta game because Liverpool have made a great start then it’s not as important. Then you got the Manchester City game next and that’s huge.’
