James Milner's lovely gesture as Liverpool star forfeits his international weekend break

James Milner is gladly forfeiting a rare weekend off to join forces with former team-mate Stiliyan Petrov in Glasgow to help raise funds towards tackling cancer.

He has even enlisted the help of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who will go head-to-head with his Anfield predecessor Brendan Rodgers as Celtic Park stages A Match For Cancer on Saturday.

Milner’s side will include famous names from the past such as John Arne Riise, Jamie Redknapp and Emile Heskey.

And Petrov – diagnosed with leukemia in 2012 – has called up a galaxy of former Hoops stars, including Henrik Larsson, John Hartson and Robbie Keane. Klopp and Rodgers will be in charge of the two teams.

Having retired from international football, Saturday offers Milner the opportunity to meet up again with former Aston Villa team-mate Petrov.

“To go through what he went through was tough on him and his family,” said the Red nicknamed Milly.

“Especially when you see what the disease can do to someone as strong as him. Then you think what it would be like for a young child or woman nowhere near as strong as Stiliyan.

“So anything we can do from our fortunate position as football players with our profile we’ll do.

“Hopefully, everyone can have a great day and between us we can raise a lot of money to beat his terrible disease, which affects many people every single day.”
