Jadon Sancho looked ‘half a stone slimmer’ in Manchester United’s win at Villarreal, reckons Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes hailed Jadon Sancho has Manchester United’s best player during the 2-0 win at Villarreal on Tuesday night, saying the winger ‘looked half a stone slimmer’ than he has done since arriving at the club.

Sancho has had a painfully slow start to his career with the Red Devils since signing for £73m from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, not scoring a goal or providing an assist before Tuesday.

However, he finally broke his duck as he fired home in the last minute to secure a crucial 2-0 win for United and guarantee qualification for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Scholes was thoroughly impressed with his performance, believing that the 21-year-old has not got himself properly fit and lost some weight.

‘He looked fitter than he has done and I was really pleased for him today, young player, had a difficult start but I thought he was United’s best player tonight,’ Scholes told BT Sport.

The Red Devils legend added that United should be tweaking their system to suit the winger, given his talents, offering him more support from an attacking right-back behind him.

‘I think they need to use him more,’ said Scholes. ‘Playing in this team is a little bit different, because he doesn’t have a flying full-back like he had at Dortmund and he’s not an absolute flying machine himself.

‘He wants to play into a centre-forward, play somebody in, he’s such a clever footballer, I’m really pleased for him, getting his goal and he looks fitter, he looks half a stone slimmer.’

Another former Manchester United man, Owen Hargreaves, went further on how to get the best out of Sancho, saying he needs to be given time in the team to develop relationships with Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back and Cristiano Ronaldo at centre-forward.

‘They need to get a partnership, him and Wan-Bissaka, whether it’s on the inside or outside, link up with the centre-forward, that’s what he had at Dortmund,’ said Hargreaves.

‘He had [Achraf] Hakimi and [Erling] Haaland, that little triangle was unplayable. He needs to find the partner to play behind him and who’s going to link up with him when he plays the one-twos.’
