Legendary Italian manager Arrigo Sacchi believes it would be a great move for both parties if Antonio Conte joined Manchester United, with current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fighting to save his job at Old Trafford.

Former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss Conte has been heavily linked with the Premier League club following United’s embarrassing defeat to Liverpool.

Manchester United were considering sacking Solskjaer in the aftermath of the 5-0 loss and put Conte, 52, on a shortlist of managers who could replace the Norway legend.

While Solskjaer kept hold of his job and will take charge of United’s Premier League clash against Tottenham on Saturday, he could still be relieved of his duties in the next few weeks unless results and performances drastically improve.

There have been concerns that Conte’s abrasive style of management and tendency to spend short spells at clubs would be problematic at Manchester United, but Italy legend Sacchi believes the move would benefit both parties.

‘Antonio Conte is a great man and a great coach. He gives his whole life to football and continually strives to get better,’ the former Italy and AC Milan manager told The Times.

‘When he was with me at that 1994 World Cup, he was already planning for his future as a coach: he would take notes on every training session we did so that he could store them up to use himself.

‘He’s a massively trustworthy and reliable person and he knows how to win. He had two years with Chelsea, two really difficult years where he still managed to achieve some excellent results.

‘Then he went to Inter and won the league. He knows how to get the very best out of players.

‘He would do very well for Manchester United, and they would do very well for him.’

Conte won the Premier League and FA Cup during his spell at Chelsea and picked up his fourth Serie A title last season with Inter Milan.

Former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Conte would be the ideal replacement for Solskjaer and says Manchester United should make a change to save their season.

‘Who do you get in? I think Antonio Conte would be a great fit because one or two of them need a kick up the backside,’ Redknapp told Sky Sports.

‘They need to know when they’re not doing well and that’s not the case right now. He’s going to sometimes upset players, make sure they’re on their toes… I’m not sure Ole has that personality.

‘If you lose 5-0 at home, there isn’t a manager in the world who wouldn’t come under massive pressure.

‘I can’t say I’ve ever been sold on Solskjaer as the United manager if I’m brutally honest. He’s done an OK job but we’re talking about Man Utd.

‘You want the best person in charge of your club and I don’t think Ole is that man. I’ve got a load of respect for him but you want the best.

‘United want to win titles but players have to respect the manager, and when you look at who he’s up against and how he got the job in the first place… you have to have the best and I don’t believe he’s the right man to take this club forward.’
