Leaks and rumours about when the next iPhone will launch are largely superfluous as Apple regularly unleashes its new tech in or around the second week of September.

However, 2020 is like no other year and it seems the coronavirus pandemic may have a part to play in delaying one of the most anticipated gadgets of the year.

Jon Prosser, a prolific leaker of all kinds of new tech, has suggested Apple will launch its new phone in October and that will be accompanied by new iPads.

Prosser didn’t give his sources, or his reasoning for what will cause the delay.

He kept it brief.

If true, the most likely explanation is manufacturing delays caused by the pandemic. Apple manufactures and ships millions of iPhones around the world each year. It’s a massive undertaking and we’d be surprised if the Covid-19 virus didn’t throw things off track even a little.

We also don’t know which iPad models could see a refresh this year but given Apple already released a new iPad Pro, we could probably rule that one out.

That leaves the iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad waiting for 2020 refreshes. As expected, Apple hasn’t given away any hints about what we can expect.

Prosser has a decent track record with predicting some of Apple’s previous launch plans, so he may be on to something. However, he also reckons Apple is working on a set of AR glasses which may or may not prove to be true.

Even if Apple releases the new iPhone 12 in October, it may stick to September when it comes to hosting an event to unveil the phone and talk about its new features.

How much could the iPhone 12 cost?

Tech industry analysts believe the new phone will be more expensive than the current iPhone 11 despite not bundling a charging adaptor or headphones in with it.

Jeff Pu, an analyst at Yuanta Investment Consulting, explained in a research note that the next iPhone will start at $749 (£593).

For context, the iPhone 11 launched with prices starting at $699 (£553.60).

Pu’s analysis comes from the fact Apple will start including 5G technology in the phone for the first time, according to MacRumours.

It is believed several different models of the iPhone 12 will be released, and that Apple could launch ‘Pro’ versions of the phone.

If this is the case, it’s likely the price increase would apply to these models too.

It was previously rumoured that Apple will produce four versions this year: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Max, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Screen sizes are predicted to be 5.4-inches, 6.1-inches, 6.1-inches and 6.7-inches respectively.

iPhone 12 design and spec rumours

Last month, internet tipsters released what they claim to be a leaked design of the new iPhone, but the credibility of the images remains to be seen.

The drawings, released by Twitter account @Jin_Store which is described as an ‘Apple Premium Reseller,’ show a boxy design, reminiscent of the iPhone 5.

Other reports suggest Apple may ditch bunding headphones and a charging adapter from the box with the iPhone 12 – which would be a pretty radical departure from previous models.
