Coronation Street: Nina sobs as Roy leaves in a cab

Coronation Street’s Alex Bain, who joined the soap when he was just seven years old, has turned 20.

The actor first stepped onto the cobbles when he was a youngster after he scooped the role of Simon Barlow in 2008.

Lancashire-born Alex replaced former child stars and twins Jake and Oscar Hartley who shared the role.

“I cannot believe I am 20 years old!!! Wheere did time go?” he wrote on his Instagram story.

His first TV gig was in a Rice Krispies advert before he got his big break where he starred alongside Steve Coogan in the BBC drama Sunshine.

Simon Barlow is the son of Peter Barlow and Lucy Richards, and he was adopted by Leanne Battersby.

Alex Bain said he ‘couldn’t believe’ he was 20 in his recent Instagram post

In his personal life, the actor became a dad when he was 17 years old and told Inside Soap that he “loves fatherhood”.

He welcomed his daughter Lydia-Rose in 2018 with his ex-girlfriend Levi Selby, who was 16 when she gave birth.

His little girl was born shortly after he sat his GCSE exams at school, on December 2.

Levi’s mum Judith Calvert posted on social media at the time: “All I can say is my girl did herself proud.”

“I adore having a child, I really do, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. But don’t get me wrong, she runs me ragged!” he joked.

He split with the mother of his child shortly after his daughter was born but found love with new girlfriend Molly

“It was quite nice to take a breather in lockdown, and have time to slow down and watch my daughter grow. She’s actually just started nursery, which is pretty scary.

“My family has always said that I was exactly like she is when I was her age. Before Covid, she was going to dance classes as well, so she’s really following in her dad’s footsteps. She’s always dancing and singing – it’s great!”

He and his childhood sweetheart split in 2019, shortly after the pair became parents.

A source told The Sun at the time: “It’s a shame they couldn’t make the relationship work but they’ve gone their separate ways.

“They’re both now just trying to move on but they absolutely adore their daughter.”

But the Corrie star has since found love, after he announced his relationship with new girlfriend Mollie in May last year.

However in May this year Alex was the victim of cruel trolling on social media after bullies criticised his parenting skills.

Defending himself he took to Instagram stories to highlight the “struggle” of being a “single dad,” refusing to accept any further nasty comments.

“Anyone don’t like me and the way I’ve raised my daughter then they can pop up and DM me and we can talk about it honestly had enough,” he posted on Instagram stories.

He has been at the centre of many controversial and emotional storylines over his 13 years on the show.

In 2013, he fell victim to bullying at the hands of Grace Piper (Ella-Grace Gregoire) and Faye Windass (Ellie Leach).

His character experienced anger issues after his step-dad Kal Nazir (Jimi Mistry) died in a fire.
