Jose Mourinho was critical of his Roma team after they smashed CSKA Sofia 5-1 in the Europa Conference League and claimed the Italians ‘didn’t play well’.

Roma came from behind to crush 10-man CSKA and begin their Europa Conference League campaign in style, although Mourinho was ‘not satisfied with the performance’.

The Bulgarians took a shock lead at the Stadio Olimpico when Irish forward Graham Carey rifled home from close range.

But Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini scored twice to cancel out CSKA’s opener and put the hosts ahead, before Stephan El Shaarawy, Gianluca Mancini and Tammy Abraham sealed an emphatic 5-1 win.

It was Roma’s sixth straight victory and saw the club’s momentum under Mourinho continue, but the new manager picked holes in his team’s performances and said he was ‘not satisfied’ with the display.

‘We didn’t play well. We are really creating a team, but today I didn’t like our game,’ said the former Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid boss.

‘At times we did well, a strong team is coming together, we have already talked about it and must be even more of a team when we go into the difficult moments.

‘However, I was not satisfied with the performance at all. We did not play with quality. Just two days ago we trained about this, but the full-backs didn’t push much, there wasn’t enough intensity, we lost so many defensive duels.

‘I cannot say we played badly, but we didn’t do well either and certainly not enough to warrant a 5-1 result. Yes, we have more quality than CSKA Sofia, but we didn’t do enough.’

Despite criticising aspects of Roma’s performance, Mourinho did single out his captain Pellegrini for praise and revealed he was set to sign a new contract with the club.

‘He is a player with quality, a great deal of potential and he told me yesterday that he’ll sign the new contract soon,’ Mourinho added.

‘I think it can definitively give more strength to this rapport he is building with the fans. Pellegrini is the captain, he will sign a new contract and is very important for us.’

Pellegrini, meanwhile, believes Mourinho is creating ‘something special’ at Roma and thanked the legendary manager for his support since arriving in Italy.

‘Mourinho’s trust has helped me a lot, I can only thank him but this is only the beginning,’ the midfielder said. ‘He has to keep making me and also the team grow.

‘This year there is something special and we have to keep improving if we want to win something. We try to make the most of this environment.’
