PAID holidays and pensions are perks we all take for granted at work – but with firms battling to attract top talent, there’s a new boom in much more exciting employer benefits.
While nine in ten employees claim work benefits are ‘important to their overall job satisfaction’, hunting down far juicier perks was one of the top three reasons millennials switched roles in 2020.

Freebies formerly seen as exotic – such as ping pong tables in the office to free catered lunches and an on-site gym – are now standard.
Instead, bosses are upping their game to offer inventive and unusual perks to attract workers.

1. Pawternity Leave
Some companies are now offering paid leave for new pet owners, such as Mars or Nestlé.
With Dogs Trust reporting a spike in dog adoptions during the pandemic, this could be just the ticket for those hoping for a better work-life balance for them and their pet pals.
2. Volunteer Hours
Wouldn’t it be nice if your workplace offered you a few extra days you could use for volunteering?
According to a government survey conducted in 2021, 62% of people reported volunteering in some capacity over the past 12 months – so this is one perk that could make a big difference.
3. Egg Freezing
Tech giants Spotify and Facebook are on the list of companies offering money to employees who want to freeze their eggs – eggcellent news, because the price of egg freezing is no yoke! (Ahem.)
4. Unlimited Holidays
Netflix is just one big company offering unlimited holiday days.
That’s right: unlimited PTO. Just think of the possibilities.
5. Donation Matching
That same government survey tells us that 63% of people donated to charitable causes in a 12-month period.
Let’s hope some of them work at companies that match employees’ donations – usually up to a certain limit.

Yes, 1,000 times yes! Anyone who has suffered the indignity of a soggy sandwich from a plastic lunchbox will know just how valuable a decent lunch is.
This is a benefit we’d be seriously into.
7. Death Dividends
A little morbid, maybe, but Google’s guarantee to give a spouse or partner 50% of your salary for 10 years after your death would provide a serious amount of comfort.
8. Free Ice Cream
Last, but by no means least, Canadian creamery Ben & Jerry’s gives each and every employee three pints of ice-cream.
These quirky perks mean nothing without financial security, mental wellbeing and a decent office culture, so it should come as no surprise that researchers have discovered that today’s young workers value “respectful communication in the workplace” the most.
