I’m a fashion director and this is the wardrobe staple I can’t live without

It’s the item that I’ve worn sitting in the front row at Milan Fashion week and to the most fabulous fashion parties. Yet when I’m faced with the weekly supermarket shop or hosting a back garden birthday party, I’ll pick the same piece. What could this wonder item be? It’s… the denim dress. My dedication to denim is clear in my wardrobe (I have more than twenty denim dresses at the last count…) but they are truly my most worn item. The bonus is that with a little clever styling they can become the hardest-working piece you add to your wardrobe, too.

If you’re looking to streamline your style in 2021 and try out a capsule wardrobe, you’d do well to start by adding in any one of GLAMOUR’S edit. I wrote about why the denim dress is one of the 10 must-have items you should own in my book, How To Dress. Dress them up or down and you can make them work for every occasion. Even onto the red carpet, as Britney Spears proved in 2001. Yes, they suit casual occasions and WFH – but I particularly love the denim dress’s versatility and the surprise element that comes when this tough fabric is transformed into a chic silhouette (making it totally office-appropriate, when we are allowed into an office again, obvs.)

Of course denim dresses have a different vibe depending on their wash, cut and detailing… A dark indigo denim dress cut into in a fitted silhouette, like Altuzarra’s, is certainly more suited to the boardroom (just add point-toe court shoes) while a strappy, pale washed style – like All Saint’s – makes more sense for picnics in the park with a pair of espadrilles.

Right now you could wear Marques’Almeida’s t-shirt style over a polo-neck with tights and chunky boots but when we are allowed Out-Out, imagine (just imagine!) shimmying around a dance-floor in Iro’s one-shoulder minidress. Denim really is the go anywhere fabric and these are the dresses that will go the distance. You can bet I’ll be adding one or two to my collection, too!

Want more denim content? Here are the best denim staples of all time to shop immediately, while these are the best jeans for women if you want to feel a bit more put-together. This way for the best denim jackets, over here for the best denim jumpsuits and holla in this direction for the best denim shirts. You’re welcome.
