I'm A Celebrity stars issued with intimacy warning after Hollie Arnold gets axed

Hollie Arnold’s emotional departure from I’m A Celebrity could have a major impact on the contestants’ mental health, according to a top psychotherapist.

On last night’s show paralympian Hollie, 26, became the first star to be evicted after the public vote – leaving many of her fellow contestants tearful.

While Noel McDermott doesn’t believe the athlete’s exit will put an emotional strain on her camp mates, he has warned they’re at risk of mistaking intensity for intimacy, reports the Mirror.

He told the Mirror : “The departure of the first celebrity Hollie has happened and it’s likely to focus the minds of the remaining contestants.

“This is a competition and mimics real life in that we have to get on and work together as well as look after number one. This is a reminder of the reality of this being a competition above all.

“The nature of the competition with the challenges and then the communal living create an intensity to the relationships which can be mistaken for real bonds.

“And while some may stay in touch in general, intensity is not intimacy and it is intimacy that creates long-lasting bonds between people. Intimacy is showing at times in the gentler moments between contestants.”

The contestants will be whittled down by public votes over the next six days.

The final four will battle it out on Friday, December 4 where the King or Queen of the castle will be announced.

Noel reckons the final stage of the competition will draw out the stars’ emotions more than Hollie’s leaving will.

He explained: “Later in the competition as these intimate moments grow, fellow contestants leaving is likely to have more of an impact and the sense of loss will increase, and we may see more emotional lability.

“But for now in these early stages, Hollie going is not likely to leave significant emotional processing for the rest of the contestants.”

Last night, hosts Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly entered the camp in the Gwrych Castle, Wales, and gave the bad news to javelin champion Hollie.

The athlete said she was “devastated” to have been the first campmate voted out, and said she already missed her fellow contestants.

“I tried my best and I loved every minute of it,” she sobbed, before explaining she hopes Jordan North will win because he is “so lovely”.

“I am devastated, but one of us has to go, right? You have to be prepared, but honestly that was just the best experience I’ve ever had, I didn’t want to leave.”

“I just want to give you a big hug!” said Dec, but the hosts had to remain socially distanced from the celebrities.

“This is awful,” remarked Ant, as Hollie cried.

“I never really knew what to expect, so I just wanted to go in there and enjoy every single moment of it, it’s a crazy opportunity for me, and to meet those 11 amazing people, I can’t thank them enough.

“I love them, I miss them already, I really, really do,” she added, calling the other celebrities “friends for life”.
