Ian Wright is expecting Liverpool to beat Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday as he feels the Reds overcoming their recent injury setbacks has once again proven their mettle.

Jurgen Klopp’s side sit in first place in the Premier League going into this weekend’s big clash against City, however, their title defence hasn’t gone as smoothly as they would’ve hoped so far.

They were humiliatingly beaten 7-2 by Aston Villa earlier in the season and have suffered several major injuries to key players.

With Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and Joel Matip all sidelined in recent weeks, Klopp has had to rely on the inexperienced Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips to partner Joe Gomez at centre-back.

But they have found a way to win despite their injury crisis in defence, and the outstanding form of summer signing Diogo Jota has been key for the Reds.

The Portuguese scored a hat-trick in the 5-0 win over Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday night, taking his tally to seven goals in his first 10 Liverpool games.

Meanwhile, City go into this weekend’s game five points behind their title rivals in 10th place.

And Arsenal legend Wright feels the Reds remain the best team in the league and he backed them to come away from the Etihad with all three points

‘Yes, losing Van Dijk is going to cause you a problem, and Fabinho,’ Wright said on The Kelly and Wrighty Show.

‘But we’re still talking about a Liverpool team that with everything that’s happened, they’ve still found their way back to top.

‘Because going forward, you look at the form of Jota, they’re still for me the best team in the league.

‘I expect them [Liverpool] to beat them [City] because I feel like they’ve got themselves and their minds back in what they need to do.’
