Rio Ferdinand believes that Mauricio Pochettino was ‘disrespectful’ for giving Lionel Messi the role of lying behind the Paris Saint-Germain wall at free-kicks.

The Argentinian star scored his first goal for the French giants during their 2-0 win over Manchester City in the Champions League, sending the Parc De Princes into raptures.

But shortly after, the 34-year-old showed off his defensive abilities as he was seen lying behind the wall during a City free kick.

Ferdinand joked that Messi should not be doing that role, and that if he was in the PSG team, he would offer to do it instead.

‘The moment Pochettino asked him to do this at the training ground, someone should have gone in and said, “No, no, no, Lionel Messi doesn’t do that.” You can’t do it, it’s disrespectful, I wouldn’t have it,’ he said on BT Sport.

‘If I was in that team, I would be like, “No, no, no, I’d lay down for you.” He doesn’t get his kit dirty, that’s not what Messi does.’

Manchester City were reportedly interested in signing Messi in the summer, after the attacker left his boyhood club Barcelona.

But City boss Pep Guardiola admitted that he was happy for the six-time Ballon d’Or winner in his new life in France.

‘If Messi is happy in Paris, I will be so happy for Leo. And let me say I’m in love with Marco Verratti,’ he said after the match.
