'I won't accept my wife's choice of baby name because our daughter will hate us'

A husband says he caused a huge argument with his wife after branding her a “lunatic” over her choice of baby name for their daughter.

He says the issue has become “definitely the weirdest situation that’s come up during our relationship” as they have been trying to agree on a name before the arrival of their little girl.

Describing them both as “very normal and average”, he says they had been discussing tradition girls names for their daughter until his wife found one she was set on.

When the soon-to-be mum told him she wanted to call their baby girl George, the man says at first he assumed she was joking and didn’t believe her.

But his partner said she loved the name, and although there was no particular reason for wanting to use George other than simply liking it, she thought it would be “unique and cute”.

The husband said: “I disagree on both fronts, but more importantly, I was against it because it’s going to lead to a lifetime of bullying.

“I can see our daughter hating us when she’s older for forcing her to deal with a name that made her a target for bullies, and she would be within her rights if she did.

“I told my wife my objections, but she insisted that we name our daughter George and kept aggressively trying to change my mind.

“That is when I said that only a lunatic would think naming a girl George is a good idea.

“I have tried to backtrack some by pointing out that I never directly called her a lunatic but only said that someone who thinks it’s a good idea is one, but that hasn’t made any difference.

“The thing is I still do believe that it’s a crazy thing to want to do and borderline parental negligence.

“I don’t think a rational person would do it knowing the child will be the one to take the brunt of the pushback.”

He added that his suggestions to instead name her Georgia or Georgiana had been rejected, and things with his wife “weren’t great right now”.

After saying he doesn’t feel like he had done anything wrong, he asked others for their opinion on Reddit – and it split opinion.

Many slammed him the way he had spoken to his wife, writing: “Disagreeing and discussing is fine, calling her a lunatic makes you the a**hole.”

Another argued: “Go read a Famous Five book. George, short for Georgina, had been a girls nickname since forever.”

But others defended him, agreeing that the name would cause problems, as one said: “If she won’t even consider the variant to George like Georgia, she is being weird and stubborn. Your child will likely not enjoy being called George growing up.”

And some thought they were both causing the problem, commenting: “Everybody sucks here because she won’t hear your thoughts on the matter and you’re just kinda obsessed with this idea of George being a lot weirder than it is.”
