'I look so much like Harry Kane that people buy me drinks and girls chat me up'

England hero Harry Kane may have led his team into the Euro 2020 final – but he’s not the only one scoring.

Lookalike Danny McLaughlin has seen his DMs flooded by female fans since people noticed he had a striking resemblance to the Tottenham ace.

After rising to fame during the 2018 World Cup and appearing on ITV’s Lorraine, the 29-year-old says he was bombarded by admirers shooting their shot – though sadly for them, he’s happily settled with his own WAG.

“I had a lot of people sliding in my DMs on Instagram,” Danny tells the Mirror. “It was one after another, I thought, ‘This is ridiculous’.

“Some cringey messages saying, ‘I don’t usually do this but I saw you on TV and thought you were really cute.’

“I just remember looking at it laughing and thinking how bizarre it was. I’d send it to my missus saying, ‘You’ve got some competition’.

Lookalike fame saw bouncers let pals into clubs for free

Football-mad Danny, from Epping, Essex, didn’t think anything of his lookalike status until his mates started commenting at university.

“That’s when I first got noticed,” he says. “We were lining up in a nightclub and I think Harry had scored against Arsenal.

“I didn’t think anything of it, it was only when friends said it to me and then all of a sudden we were getting into night clubs for free or queue jumping which was something special.

“Especially at university – everyone wants to be your friend.”

While Kane stands at a not-so-stumpy 6ft 2, his doppelganger incredibly towers over him at 6ft 8.

But that hasn’t stopped fans queuing up for selfies outside pubs, stadiums and even on train platforms.

The World Cup saw Danny’s popularity skyrocket as England reached the semi-final, but the Euro 2020 has proved just as hectic, with eager Three Lions supporters asking him for video links and voice messages.

“When I do go out, I wear my England shirt and I do like Kane and have him on the back of it. It’s hilarious,” he says of being crowded by punters.

“It’s like anything, you see one person doing something and it makes you want to follow suit. So if someone else sees something in someone, you naturally go, ‘Oh he does actually, I want a photo’.”

Plays for celeb footie team – with Prince Charles and Meghan Markle

Danny has been in high demand since 2018, signing to lookalike agencies, doing Cameo videos and appearing at charity dos and corporate events.

He even plays in a football team full of other dead ringers like Raheem Sterling, Prince Charles, Meghan Markle and Kate Moss. So who’s the star player?

“The Robbie Williams lookalike is actually good at football, Prince Charles isn’t particularly,” he says. “I’d put myself up there in the mix. I’ve got a tall stature so I can definitely get in with the headers and I’ve got a good foot on me as well.”

He says that while he has a legion of well-wishers, there are inevitably the occasional trolls.

“Obviously you’re never going to look exactly like him and you’re never going to please everyone, but there’s a lot of haters out there who are going to try and bring you down,” he explains.

However, Danny’s message to the naysayers is that he’s not looking to cash in on his claim to fame.

Working full-time on the prevention and diversion team at Hackney Council, he donates any proceeds from his lookalike work to Prostate Cancer UK – a touching tribute to his dad, Des, who died from the disease in 2016 aged just 51.

“There are so many symptoms that a lot of us, like my dad, don’t realise,” he says. “He was a London taxi driver and had back pain, but never thought anything of it.

“It was only when my mum pushed him to go to the doctors that he got some blood tests done and found out he had prostate cancer. If I can at least get one person to take a test that they wouldn’t usually do, then it’s making an impact.”

‘I’d love to meet Harry – he’s going to win the final for us’

Danny’s been enjoying the Euros with his family, friends and girlfriend Kellie, whom he’s been dating for three years.

He plans to catch the final around Wembley to have some fun with the fans and even hopes to one day meet his idol in the flesh.

“I’d love to meet Harry Kane,” he admits. “He seems like a really humble guy, I’d love for his agent to get in contact. I think he’s got enough going on at the Euros!

“I can just see the photos though, I’m a little taller than him in height, but just to see us in a Tottenham kit or any kit, I can see it going viral.”

While many pundits questioned Kane’s form earlier in the tournament, Danny has stuck by the striker, insisting it would have been “preposterous” to drop the Premier League’s top goalscorer.

“I felt like it was just a matter of time,” he says. “I know in the Euro fantasy team I do, I kept him as my captain even though everyone else was scoring points. I just kept him in my team knowing full well he was going to perform.”

He’s backing Kane to lead his country to glory in Sunday’s final against Italy – and reckons the England captain will grab the goals for his team.

“I think it will be high scoring,” he says. “There’s a lot of talent in the Italy squad as well as England’s. I think we’ll win 2-1 again, but it will be within the 90 minutes.

“But who knows, I also thought that even though Denmark were good, we’d run riot.

“My predictions haven’t been great – other than sticking with Harry Kane!”
