I gave my cousin a scratchard and he won £36,000… now my wife is demanding every penny BACK

A MAN gave his cousin a £5 scratchcard for Christmas – and he ended up winning a staggering £36,000.

He gave the ‘stocking stuffer’ winning scratchcard to his family member over the festive holidays – but now his wife has demanded they get every penny back after the ‘fluke’ win.

The unnamed man from the US posted the ordeal on Reddit – saying that his 23-year-old cousin was gobsmacked when he won the minimum jackpot of £36,000 ($50,000.)

But now his wife has demanded that they get the “life-changing” scratchcard back from the lucky cousin.

Speaking about the winnings, the man wrote on Reddit: “I scooped him up in a big bear hug and said Merry Christmas you lucky a**hole.

“He was screaming and his mom was actually in tears and the whole room was excited. It was literally one of the top ten experiences of my life”.

However, the man then got a text message from his wife, simply reading “come out to the car”.

He said: “She told me there is no way that we are giving my cousin $50k, then starts fussing at me about buying the lotto tickets to begin with.”

The man posting the dilemma, who is said to be in his forties, said that he and his wife were already financially comfortable.

But for the 23-year-old, the jackpot win would be “life-changing” as he recently graduated from university.

On reflection, he said that the money “couldn’t have gone to a better member of my family.”

But the win has caused friction between him and his wife – who has “barely” spoken to him since the 23-year-old hit the jackpot.

The man continued: “His mom is single and was one of those fiercely independent women who refused charity.

“She took on extra jobs to help him pay for school. He worked at least two jobs himself while going to school full time and still managed dean’s list.

“But he still had to take out loans. He landed a job, but he can’t afford a car yet or to live close to the office, so he’s looking at nearly a two-hour commute.

“He’s also saving for an engagement ring for his sweet girlfriend of three years.

“This money would literally change this kid’s life and frankly, I think it couldn’t have gone to a better member of my family.”

Despite explaining that they had only given the cousin a £5 ticket, the wife was “not buying, and she won’t let it go.”

The man added: “She is now demanding I go back in there and take the ticket back from him, saying maybe we’ll give him some of it.

“We argue a little bit, I can’t get her to explain why she wants this money so bad other than “it’s ours and you’re not giving it away”.

After reading the dilemma, Reddit users swooped in to make the man feel better for his decision – adding that the wife can’t demand the ticket back.

One person said: “You don’t take gifts back when you realize they are worth more than you thought.”
