‘I can’t think about it’ – Erik ten Hag responds to Manchester United interest

Ten Hag addressed rumours on Sunday night.

Erik ten Hag insists he remains fully focused on Ajax after being named on Manchester United’s list of managerial candidates.

United confirmed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure on Sunday morning with Michael Carrick set to take charge of the club for Tuesday’s Champions League showdown with Villarreal.

The Premier League side plan to appoint an interim boss until the end of the season with Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino reportedly the club’s top target to take over next summer.

Ten Hag is also said to be an option the club are strongly considering with the Dutchman refusing to rule out a move to Old Trafford.

‘I am focused on my team, we have a brilliant squad and we want to achieve a lot. The rest only distracts,’ Ten Hag told ESPN, speaking after Ajax’s 5-0 win over RKC Waalwijk.

Pushed on whether he will remain Ajax boss, he added: “It is a weird question. I heard nothing about it, so I can’t think about it.’

Ten Hag has led Ajax to two Dutch titles and while the manager would reportedly consider United, it remains unlikely his current club would entertain the idea of allowing him to leave mid-season.

United have already approached former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane over replacing Solskjaer, with the Frenchman a free agent after leaving the Spanish giants in the summer.

Sources close to Zidane however suggest he is not interested to joining United at this point.

Former United defender Laurent Blanc is one possible option for the interim role. The former PSG and France manager is currently head coach at Qatari side Al-Rayyan.

Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim and Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui have also put forward as potential options.
