Andy Murray and Nick Kyrgios have both been left baffled by the behaviour of the Australian Open crowd in the opening days of the tournament.

Following Murray’s epic five-set win over Nikoloz Basilashvili, fans could be heard appearing to boo the Scot during his post-match interview.

‘It’s painful stuff there, those guys,’ Murray said at the time.

However, it seems fans have in fact been shouting ‘SIUU’ – the phrase associated with Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic celebration that has become famous around the world.

Expanding on his thoughts in his press conference, Murray admitted it was ‘incredibly irritating.’

‘Initially, I thought it was [a boo], because there were some people booing during my practice yesterday. I have no idea what for. Yeah, so originally that’s what I thought it was,’ he said.

‘But then yeah after a few times it was like, no, they’re doing that, I think it’s like ‘Siuuu’ or something that Ronaldo does when he scores. It was incredibly irritating.’

If Murray thought he had it bad, it was nothing compared to what Kyrgios received.

The Aussie delighted fans in his first-round win over Liam Broady, entertaining the crowd with ridiculous trick shots throughout.

Kyrgios had fans cheering almost all of his winners and admitted he couldn’t believe the amount of times fans were shouting out throughout his match.

‘Once every set yeah? F*** every point, “Siuuu’ ‘Siuuu,”‘ Kyrgios said as he imitated the crowd’s chant before one serve.

Kyrgios seemed to echo Murray’s thoughts on the regularity of the crowd chants but stopped short of calling it ‘irritating’ like the former British No.1 had.

‘I don’t know what I’ve done to this crowd because you guys are a zoo now. You guys are out of control,’ he said.

‘I’m just happy to be in front of you guys again. Honestly, it’s so much fun.

‘It’s just a stupid [chant], f***, I can’t believe they did it so much.

‘They were doing some Ronaldo thing. Ronaldo does it every time he scores. It’s like – I thought they were going to do it for 10 minutes.

‘They did it for two-and-a-half hours, like every point. I don’t know why. It was a zoo out there.’
