Humza who revealed he became a father to his little girl Amal in May 2019, and is step dad to wife Nadia El-Nakla’s 11-year-old daughter, wasn’t aware that his camera and sound were on as he sat down fifteen minutes early for his Zoom chat.
Humza was officially due to join in the meeting of the Justice Committee at 10am, but was sitting in his seat getting ready to join when his fellow MSP’s began to notice noise coming from his feed.
Committee convener Tory MSP Adam Tomkins tried to get Humza’s attention by referring to him in some questions, but was met with no response.
After deciding to wait until the Justice Secretary could respond at his allotted time of 10am, Adam moved on to other upcoming items on the agenda for the Scottish Parliament TV broadcast.
He added: “Can we just pause. There’s no need to break broadcasting but can we just pause for a moment.”
But Humza could be seen talking to someone and exclaimed loudly: “Oh, it is rainy?”
He then says ‘nice’ and ends up blowing kisses to the person off camera , who turns out to be his baby daughter.
Humza then cuts his feed.
As the other MSPs on the Zoom call end up smiling and giggling at what they witnessed, Adam Tomkins adds: “There’s a very severe danger that this is going to go viral.”
After returning to the Zoom call for his official participation, Humza carries on business as usual.
Dr Hannah Graham later Tweeted the video writing: “There is a very significant danger this is going to go viral” @ProfTomkins convening @SP_Justice as Cabinet Sec @HumzaYousaf, unaware his video+sound are on @ScotParl TV, blows kisses to his wee daughter, chats about the rain. MSPs smile. Cheery start to a long Committee session.”
Yousaf retweeted Graham with the hashtag WFH (working from home) and he said: “In my defence, I was not due to talk on that agenda item and more importantly my daughter was blowing me kisses from the door of my office – impossible to ignore! My colleagues (rightly) having a good laugh at my expense.”
Humza’s followers thought the clip was adorable with one saying: “Brilliant – great that your wee girl took priority!”
Another added: “Quite right, you can’t ignore her, she is a real wee cutie!”
And another added: “So lovely! Glad to see we all have similar experiences of home working.”
One critic said: “Any professional would ensure doors were closed/locked when using Zoom for their work.”
