TUMBLING unemployment is leading to a massive rise in the number of households where everyone living there was in work.

Those going out to work per home has increased by over 330,000 in the past year, official figures show.

The rise in those going out to work comes as unemployment falls.

According to most up-to-date figures, joblessness decreased by 23,000 to 1.31 million in the three months to September.

This took the jobless rate down to 3.8 per cent of the working population — the lowest for more than 40 years.

And figures released by the Office for National Statistics reflect this.

Matt Weston, managing director of recruiters Robert Half, said: “The growing number of households with at least one adult in employment is a clear mark of the continued resilience of the UK labour market.

“As the demand for skilled talent continues to rise above supply, businesses are prioritising the need to offer greater flexibility and work-life balance to attract the right skills.

“This includes exploring flexible schedules, remote working, job sharing and part-time roles.”

The agency reported an estimated 21 million households had 59.6 per cent of working age members aged 16 years in September.

This is up by 1.2 per cent compared to a year ago.

There were an estimated 5.6 million households or 26.9 per cent with a mix of at least one working and one jobless adult, down 137,000 or 0.8 per cent over the past year.

The ONS research also found there were an estimated 2.8 million households (13.5 per cent) where no member of the household was in work, down 68,000 or 0.4 per cent over the last year.
