England booked their place in the quarter finals of the World Cup with a dramatic victory over Colombia on penalties on Tuesday night – their first ever shootout win at the tournament.
Harry Kane opened the scoring in the second half from the spot, but centre-back Yerry Mina’s stoppage-time header forced extra-time and a penalty shootout.
Jordan Henderson missed his kick, giving the advantage to Colombia, but then Mateus Uribe hit the bar and Jordan Pickford denied Carlos Bacca to give Eric Dier the opportunity to seal the win.
Understandably, there were joyous scenes around the country as the Three Lions finally won a penalty shootout, and the match dominated the back pages both in England and abroad…
New York Post (USA)
Who says Americans don’t care about soccer? The New York Post went for a regal theme on their front page.
L’Equipe (France)
L’Equipe’s headline translates as ‘Ghost Hunters’ as England expelled their penalty shootout demons in Moscow.
AS (Spain)
Are the rest of the world taking notice? AS’s front page says ‘England Are Serious’ as they progressed to the quarter finals.
