How Charlotte Church went from owning her own yacht to performing at Pontins

Charlotte Church once sang in front of a pope, a president and royalty, and even owned her own private yacht. Now the former child star is be taking to the stage once more, this time at a holiday park in Prestatyn.

The Voice Of An Angel will be headlining the Bongo’s Bingo School Reunion weekend at Pontins in the seaside town in Denbyshire in September.

Other acts on the bill include Nadine Coyle, 5ive, Paul Chuckle from the Chuckle Brothers and local heroes Goldie Lookin’ Chain.

It’s a long way from the height of her stardom, when the now 35-year-old wowed Bill Clinton and The Queen with her powerful operatic voices, sold millions of albums worldwide, and was said to have been worth £25 million.

We’ve taken a closer look at Charlotte’s changing fortunes.

Born in Wales, she shot to fame when she was only 11 years old after singing Pie Jesus from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem on This Morning in 1997.

Her debut album, Voice Of An Angel, was released in 1998. It got to Number One in the classical charts, making Charlotte the youngest ever artist to achieve this and it eventually went double platinum in the US and UK.

Charlotte’s mum Maria estimated that her daughter was worth £7 million when she turned 18. The then-teenager said she wanted to celebrate adulthood by buying a £1 million bra covered in rubies. Charlotte also splashed out on a Mini Cooper convertible and took a group of friends away on a girlie holiday to Ibiza. Charlotte reportedly paid for everything from the bar tabs to a private villa complete with personal chauffeur. It was rumoured that she racked up a massive £10,000 bill.

A year later in 2005, the Crazy Chick singer was dating Welsh international rugby star, Gavin Henson. For a while, they were nicknamed the Welsh Posh and Becks and became famous for a lavish lifestyle, including owning a £800,000 yacht which they moored at Swansea Marina.

Charlotte met her future husband, musician Johnny Powell that same year, and they married in 2017. Charlotte’s third child, a little girl whose name has not been publicly announced, was born in February this year.

The mum of three has admitted that she hasn’t been great with her finances in the past. She has said: “I will have to work for the rest of my life, not because I want to but because I have to.”

“I haven’t got a lot of money,” she continued.

“I’ve got enough to be comfortable if I was reasonable for the rest of my life.

“But I’m not reasonable, so I will have to find a way to sustain my lifestyle,” she added.

Her latest financial venture is to turn a huge property in the Elan Valley, said to be worth £1.5 million into a holiday retreat, wellness centre and wedding venue.

Charlotte’s renovation journey will be made into a TV series, called Charlotte Church: Building The Dream, due to be shown on Really and discovery+ later this year.

She said: “I feel so grateful to have been able to buy this house. I’m absolutely obsessed with the woodlands and the outside space..
