Holly Willoughby has been branded ‘insensitive’ and ‘rude’ after a ‘crass’ comment she made to Strictly winner Rose Ayling-Ellis when she said she ‘couldn’t hear a pin drop’
The 40-year-old presenter was sitting down for a chat with the 27-year-old deaf EastEnders actress and her dance partner Giovanni Pernice, 31, when the awkward moment left fans flooding Twitter after Holly said that they “won’t be able to hear a pin drop” when they perform their couple’s choice dance on tour later this year.
During Strictly Come Dancing 2021, Rose and her dance partner Giovanni performed a stunning and breathtaking routine where they featured 10 seconds of silence in tribute to the deaf community.
The dance was flawless, garnered rave reviews and left the judges and viewers at home moved, emotional and teary-eyed.
Rose was chatting away to Holly and Phil about her and Giovanni’s decision to perform the iconic dance on tour, when she said: “We said it’d be weird for us not to do it, I think.”
To which her dance partner said: “It’s such an important dance. It’s a statement in an arena with 10,000 people live and to stop the music would be quite spectacular. It’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever done on Strictly.”
In an awkward quip, Holly then said: “You won’t be able to hear a pin drop in the arena at that moment, let me tell you. It was just a bit of magic on TV actually.”
Viewers at home were completely taken aback by Holly’s comment, with many taking to Twitter to make sure they hadn’t misheard what the presenter had said.
One person took to Twitter and said: “Beautiful dance but your comment Holly??? Jeez terrible.”
Another said: “‘You could hear a pin drop’ is not the best thing to say, Holly…”

A fourth viewer said: “Well that was awkward Holly, telling Rose she won’t be able to hear a pin drop in the audience.”
And a fifth branded Holly ‘crass and rude’, saying: “Holly asking if she could hear a pin drop.. a bit crass and rude.”
Another posted: “The saying is you CAN hear a pin drop so doubly awkward Holly said you won’t be able to hear a pin drop.”
Rose and Giovanni’s appearance on the daily morning magazine show comes as the Strictly Come Dancing nationwide tour begins next week.
Contestants from the 2021 series will be heading around the country to perform their favourite dances for the public and their fans who voted to keep them in the show.
